The Buddy Pair Process

A partnership begins with one step.

From the first conversation to training together, The Buddy System Inc. helps veterans explore a service dog partnership with support along the way.

Built around the veteran

More than a match.

A Buddy Pair brings together a veteran and a suitable service dog, supported by training professionals and a community that cares.

The Buddy System Inc. coordinates the process, supports first year veterinary care, and connects the veteran and dog with selected training partners. The veteran takes an active role in training and daily care.

The path to a Buddy Pair

Each partnership develops at its own pace. These stages explain what to expect as an application moves through review and, if selected, toward a suitable match and training.

  1. Start a Conversation

Email The Buddy System Inc. to request application information. We will explain the process and help you understand what information is needed to begin.

  2. Complete Your Application

Share information about your needs, daily life, and goals for a service dog partnership. An application begins the review process and does not guarantee selection or placement.

  3. Review & Verification

As part of the review, we work with you to obtain verification from the physician or doctor who diagnosed the disability the service dog would help address. Our team will explain the necessary documentation and permissions.

  4. Selection & Next Steps

We review the application, supporting information, and available program resources. If selected to move forward, we discuss the next steps and expectations for participating in the program.

  5. Find a Suitable Match

We consider the veteran’s needs alongside a dog’s temperament and suitability for service work. We prioritize shelter and rescue options when a suitable match is available.

  6. Support a Healthy Start

First year veterinary care is supported as part of the Buddy Pair program. We explain the care arrangements and the veteran’s responsibilities as the partnership develops.

  7. Train Together

The veteran and dog work together with a selected professional training partner. Training and handler education help the veteran build, practice, and maintain the skills needed for the partnership.

  8. Stay Connected

The partnership continues beyond the first steps. Check ins, ongoing guidance, and oversight help the veteran and dog stay connected to support as they grow together.

Applying is the first step. An inquiry or application is not an approval or a promise of placement. The Buddy System Inc. will discuss availability and next steps with you during the review process.

Growing together

Who provides the training?

Selected professional training partners provide training. The veteran and dog learn together, while The Buddy System Inc. coordinates and supports the partnership.

How long does the process take?

Timing varies with the application review, availability of a suitable dog, training needs, and program resources. Contact The Buddy System Inc. to discuss current availability and next steps.

What medical information will I need?

The review includes verification from the diagnosing physician or doctor regarding the disability the service dog would help address. Our team will explain what is needed and how to provide it. Your first inquiry can simply request application information.

Can I ask questions before applying?

Yes. Email [email protected] to ask about the program, participation expectations, or the application process.
